GOW Multiplayer Fix

To play Gears of War online using Hamachi you need a client fix that will bypass the maximum of 30 ping for LAN games. You can get this fix from RapidShare or from MiHD.

MiHD Link

Make backups of the original files in your GOW install folder that this fix will replace.

(note: this fix will remove any of your old profiles, such as your saved campaign, keyboard configuration, and you are only allowed to use one player profile per machine)

To play hop on the IRC room and look for players and get their Hamachi IP address from them and when you are in the game open the console (by pressing either ~ or ¬, depending on what type of keyboard you have) and type...
open hamachi-ip
Where hamachi-ip will be replaced by the hosting players Hamachi IP address.
For example you might type...
open 5.1.2.3
...if 5.1.2.3 was the Hamachi IP address of the hosting player.

How to Change Your Name

Tired of being Player1? Follow this tutorial for information on how to change from being a Player1 to be something with up to seven characters of awesome.

First, you need a hex editing tool, for this tutorial I will demonstrate using "frhed" simply because it is free and will work good enough for this simple of a task.

What you need to do is get yourself a copy of frhed from here. (or the authors site above)

Next, after you have the hex editor installed open it up, you should have a window that looks like this.

After you have frhed open click on the "open" button and browse for OnlineSubsystemPC.u (on a default install this will be located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\WarGame\CookedPC but may be somewhere else depending on where you chose to install Gears of War)
Your screen should now look like this.

Now that you have the file open scroll down to the bottom of the file, you will see the word "Player1" as illustrated here.

Highlight the word "Player1" and right click on it. Choose "Replace" from the pop-up menu and you should see a dialog that looks like this.

Type the name you would like to use in the "Replace with" portion of the dialog box, press "Replace" and then close the dialog box.

NOTE: Your name can ONLY be seven characters long. If you want to use a name shorter than that fill the extra characters with spaces. For example if you want to use the name Bob you would replace Player1 with Bob followed by four spaces. If you want to use a name longer than Player1, well, that's just too bad. (but if you find a way to exceed seven characters let me know so I can update the tutorial)

After that push "Save" and you are now ready to play with a name other than Player1.
